Kid Shirt

Description

Two shirts made for my 3 1/2 years old nephew. The undershirt is made of natural linen, the overshirt is red cotton, but I liked the weave, and I used a ready-made cotton braid to decorate it. I also made the belt out of hand dyed soft leather. He wore it at our wedding and looked cute as a button. Making costumes for kids is a lot of fun, and doesn't require much fabric, and I could make the tunics with less pieces than an adults. The collar is a bit tricky thought, because kids have a very big head relative to the width of the shoulders, and you don't want it to be too open.

When worn with the belt, the tunic is knee lenght.
When I made a costume for my other nephew (4 at the time), I made him the trousers first and worked on the two tunics all afternoon. After his night-time bath, I wanted him to try on the tunics one last time, so I just slipped the tunics on him (without the pants or belt). Seeing the tunic which was hanging calf lenght (because the belt was not on), his father says... nice dress ! Then the boy burst in tears saying he doesn't want to wear a dress, so I quickly grab his Lord of the Rings figurines (his mother is a real maniac of LOTR, so she bought him all the trilogy figurines), showing how Aragorn, Boromir and Gandalf all have long clothes, but they are not dresses - and they look very manly! Then I figure out the pants are missing, so I make him wear the full ensemble and he is happy again. Phew.

Wow! Looks beautiful. Love the vibrant colors, and the story about the "dress rehearsal" is just too funny!!!
